The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, October 10, 2026, for the publication of the final list of candidates contesting the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
The announcement comes as political parties and their candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
According to information released by the electoral commission, 21 of Nigeria’s 22 registered political parties submitted candidates for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

The submissions comprise 936 governorship and deputy governorship candidates, alongside 9,692 candidates seeking election into the various State Houses of Assembly.
INEC had earlier published the personal particulars of candidates nominated by political parties. The October 10 publication will constitute the final list and is expected to reflect withdrawals, substitutions and other adjustments made during the nomination process.
The commission has already published the final list of candidates for the National Assembly elections. That list was released on September 12, 2026.
Legal Issues
The publication of the final governorship and State Assembly candidates’ list comes against the backdrop of legal issues surrounding some nominations.
INEC has indicated that complaints arising from the nomination process included alleged unlawful withdrawals and substitutions, typographical errors and other legal issues.
The commission has also been reviewing the implications of recent judicial decisions on the electoral timetable and nominations.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has reiterated the commission’s commitment to neutrality, operational efficiency and the integrity of the electoral process.

The commission’s revised timetable schedules the Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.
The October 10 publication is expected to give voters, political parties and other stakeholders a clearer picture of the candidates cleared to contest the state-level elections.
