Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Uzor Kalu, has urged the Federal Government to pay close attention to the concerns raised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria on governance and the country’s security situation.
Kalu said the Catholic bishops had consistently demonstrated patriotism by speaking on issues affecting Nigerians, describing them as “the conscience of the nation.”
The former Senate Chief Whip stated that the bishops’ interventions should not be viewed through a political lens but as sincere contributions aimed at strengthening democracy and improving governance.
According to him, the Church has over the years remained committed to promoting justice, accountability, peace and national development through its advocacy and humanitarian activities.
“The Catholic bishops are the conscience of Nigeria. Their advice should not be ignored because they speak in the interest of the people and the unity of the country,” Kalu said.
He noted that the country’s security and economic challenges require collective efforts from government, religious leaders, traditional institutions and citizens to achieve lasting solutions.
The former Abia State governor urged political leaders to remain receptive to constructive criticism, saying democratic governance thrives when leaders listen to credible voices and act in the public interest.
Kalu also commended the Catholic Church for its contributions to education, healthcare and humanitarian services, describing its role in nation-building as significant.
He called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address insecurity, improve economic conditions and restore public confidence through policies that prioritise the welfare of Nigerians.
The senator expressed optimism that greater collaboration between government and key stakeholders, including religious institutions, would strengthen national unity and promote sustainable development across the country.
