The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to human capacity development as the seventh Delta State Strategic Communication Workshop, DELCOM 2026, ended in Asaba.
The Communication Manager, Government House, Asaba, Mr. Jackson Ekwugum, stated this while declaring the workshop closed on Thursday.
Ekwugum said the state government recognised the importance of continuous training in building a competent workforce capable of responding to the changing demands of modern governance.
He said DELCOM 2026 provided participants with contemporary skills to navigate the rapidly evolving digital communication environment.
The Communication Manager challenged participants to put the knowledge gained into practice, saying training would have little impact if the lessons acquired were not reflected in their daily professional responsibilities.
He commended Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, for sustaining the workshop over the past seven years.
Ekwugum also praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his administration’s commitment to human capital development and programmes aimed at improving the welfare and development of residents.
The 2026 edition of DELCOM was held under the theme, “Digital Communication and Crisis Management: Building Trust and Credibility for Democratic Governance.”
The three-day programme brought together government communication personnel and other stakeholders to examine emerging trends in strategic communication.
Key areas discussed included digital media, crisis communication, media relations, reputation management, artificial intelligence, misinformation and citizen engagement.
Participants were told that the rise of social media and citizen journalism had transformed the way citizens consume and share information.
Speakers therefore emphasised the need for communicators to verify information before publication and ensure that official communication remains accurate, timely and credible.
The workshop also examined the importance of effective crisis communication, with participants encouraged to establish clear communication procedures and strengthen coordination between government agencies.
Ekwugum said government communication should move beyond publicity and focus on explaining policies, addressing citizens’ concerns, correcting misinformation and building confidence in public institutions.
He urged participants to take the lessons from DELCOM 2026 back to their respective MDAs and share useful knowledge with colleagues.
He said the ultimate objective was to improve government communication, strengthen crisis response and deepen engagement between government and citizens.
